New research indicates that patients who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users purchasing these medications need to be cognizant of the danger of quick weight regain when the medication concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to original weight in about 18 months.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with older methods.
Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Experts believe the way of the injections accounts for the heightened rebound.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."
A Chronic Issue?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have come off the medication describe a powerful return of hunger.
"It was like something flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," said an individual.
The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits relies on integrated lifestyle changes.
