No fewer than 13 individuals perish and 98 wounded in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship public works projects.

The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” affirmed the country's president.

The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's strategic vision for the southeastern region.

Another massive rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a significant growth of its duties in civilian projects. They were executed at an accelerated rate, defying forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled persistent concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party called for an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This pause was requested until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party stated that the situation "demands prompt explanations."

In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and management of these national undertakings.
